This time it was me who found a puppy on the side of the road
(also while we lived in Georgia. She was next to an old
road-killed deer carcass and I had to bathe her when I got
home and then treat her for worms...
"Chani" is a name we made up by tweaking an African word
for "lion".
I had a Leonberger rescue lady look at her but she doesn't
think there is any in her. I am sure she is a Golden retriever
mix but can tell for sure about the rest.
I had planned to find her a home and had her registered with a
rescue organization, but a series of events led me to keep her.
She is very social and playful and has lots of energy, including
the nothing-is-gonna-stop-me kind. She is smart, but of the
somewhat hard-headed Golden retriever sort that is so
different from the border collie/herding dog mentality I am
mostly used to in my own dogs. She is my biggest challenge in
terns of handling her rambunktiousness and tendency to
assume (wishfully so?) all commands are directed at one of the
other dogs. Part of that stems from the fact that I have not
worked with her the way I should have!
She loves the cats and tries to play with them but since she is
physically pretty insensitive she gets too rough for them to
enjoy it, now that she is full grown. She is a bit touchy when I
bring home new foster dogs, but after a few days she really
gets into wrestling, chasing and other kinds of hard, vigorous
play with the young, playful ones. Our poor girl always gets a
little blue when her playmates leave for new homes.

Chani loves water. So does Onyx, a former foster dog.
Here they are romping together in a lake during a hike.
Did I mention that she loves water? Even full of algae...
August 14, 2006, it was hot again so we went back to the reservoir. Yes, more pictures of Chani in the water! She and
Thunder played with that stick for a long time. The others tried to take it several times as well, so Chani attempted to
find safety in a big patch of water weeds.
