Pepper
When we named Pepper we didn't know just how well
that name was going to fit her. Pepper, peppermint,
pepper spray (Mark is a cop after all!), peperonchini...
all those things that are peppy or has a nip to it. She was
full of energy and mischief and always in a good mood,
ready to do things and go places. She loved becoming
part of a big family and quickly attached herself to us
when we brought her home. She showed a lot of border
collie behavior and it was a hoot to see her and Thunder
together. Though she has an odd coloration we think she
is probably all border collie.
Pepper was totally unplanned...
Mark responded to an obstruction in the roadway on I-75 (a big
interstate highway) where a tractor-trailer tire was in lane #1 (the
innermost). He had to stop traffic to walk all across the lanes to pull the
tire to the side of the road, and as he did that, a puppy ran out to him and
"weaseled" her way into his heart. Being the softy he is, he couldn't just
leave her at the shelter and we ended up getting her. She looked like she
was 3 months old but the vet estimated her to be 5 months after looking at
her teeth. These three pictures were taken a few days after we got her.
Besides being filthy and stunted in growth, she was surprisingly sprighty,
and quickly gained weight and made up for her months of malnutrition. Now
full grown she is the size of a regular border collie.
Pepper has never fully recovered physically from her first few months.
While she mostly looks and acts normal she has an easily upset stomach
and not very much stamina. She loves to go hiking but is the first one
to tire and walk close to us, like in this picture with Mark in the
southern end of the county (she is on the right). She has generally
become a much more mellow dog than expected and is mostly very easy
to live with - except for the howling in the crate.
Pepper is the only one of our dogs that
doesn't like to go in the water. It is hard to
get her to even cross a stream. When the
other dogs shake and throw water on her she
gets a funny disapproving look on her face.
Naturally, we originally
thought of the name Pepper
because of her coloration.

picture of Pepper, so here is a group
photo with her in the middle.
